I know a lot of us have mixed feelings about burning journals or destroying them, or whether or not we want so many books to move around with us from place to place as our lives go on but continue to be documented. I had today what I thought was a really good solution that maybe some of you would like to use.

Scan your journal pages! Scan them and save them on to a cute USB drive and even lock it with a password (good idea to keep a backup somewhere as well in case something happens to the original- always have a backup)- then your journals will be easy to move from place to place and you can still have the cathartic and meaningful action of destroying your book when you are finished with it.

Not sure if anyone would like to do this but I thought maybe someone would benefit from this thought. And if it's already been brought up within the journaling community I apologize for being redundant.

Yes, bonus points for transcribing it, for sure. Are you still keeping your books or are just using the digital copies for the peace of mind you mentioned? Excellent I'm so glad someone has used this method.

How long would you estimate this project took?

This is the most amazing thing I have ever read. Wow! I can't thank you enough for all the extra information and thoughts you provided to my (not original but that's ok!) idea.

I was thinking about the speed of camera vs. scanner as well. A camera would be much faster, indeed! I might do this myself coming up. It's a lot of pages, but it's a worthwhile endeavor.

I've been thinking of doing this as a backup in addition to keeping the paper versions. Also, yummee_pie gave me the idea to start attaching small-capacity flash drives to my paper journals - including current music, movies from my camera, etc. I kinda like that idea but haven't yet taken the leap.

But yes - I am all about backing up! The problem is that I should have started with that since the beginning, because now it's quite a task! I figure I've journaled a rough estimate of about 4,000 pages since I began in 2009. Phew! That's a lot of scans! But yes, that project may very well be in my future.

I think it so so so so so important to keep every journal we ever make, and I can't even begin to express how 10000000% against destruction of journals I am, no matter what.

I couldn't get rid of my journals either (at least the ones since adulthood) but I totally understand why other people would want to burn up a part of their lives- it's cathartic for some people to burn abuse and depression, etc.

I love love love the idea of keeping a little flash drive with music and movies etc etc that is SO AWESOME. I totally think I will have to start doing that.

I found a resource for buying flash drives in bulk so I guess it would be good to include in this comment in case anyone else is interested in using this idea: http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/bulk-1gb-usb-flash-drives.html
