Just something I thought about just now: For those of you with plain covered journals, do you decorate them? If yes, when do you decorate them? Do you wait until your journal is done (to prevent damaging the cover or mucking it up), do you do it before you start, or do you decorate it as you go?

For me personally it depends. There have been journals where I was struck by inspiration to decorate before using it, and that was my way of getting a feel for it. There have also been journals where I added things to it as I used it, or started with one tiny thing and then added to it as inspiration struck. And then there are journals that I've decorated after I was finished. There are also journals that I just leave plain (though rarely do I do this) or they're already decorated.

My current journal has yet to be decorated and I'm not struck by the urge to decorate it yet. I might want something nature themed for the cover, but it's a matter of the right inspiration striking...

I don't really decorate the whole cover but I do sometimes add a fairly large vinyl sticker to the front. Mainly to easily see which way the journal goes. I decorate the inside of the cover more than the outside.

I used to decorate my journals when I just started it. Lately, I haven't been decorating them at all.

I never decorated them after filling the journal, but I guess it would be cool to have a cover that somewhat matches the entries in it.

I make sure to buy journals that I like the cover of because I am not artistically inclined enough to decorate them myself. I can't even decorate a comp book well enough.

So, only covers I like will suffice for my journals.

I have a couple of old Moleskines I've put book covers on. A recent cheap notebook I got from a drugstore had a plain cover so I put a sticker on it and drew some silver stars with a metallic Sharpie. You can see that one here on Instagram: https://instagram.com/p/zd7QYlqcPF/?taken-by=thenerdjournals

Then I had a plain pink Moleskine that I didn't decorate aside from adding a single pink button to keep the elastic closure from slipping. You can see a video of that journal here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp1YhRVUqXc

So I guess it all depends on my mood because I obviously do different things with different journals.

Note: I had to edit this comment because I sent it before finished, oops!

I used to decorate my covers. Now they just get a 'ceo' and that's about it. I used to use stickers on Moleskines when they only came in black. Then, when Moleskines came in colors, I started doing things like paint splattering them. I've modgepodged scrapbook paper on covers before too.

My favorites that I've decorated have been ones where I added crap from my life- travel mementos, penny souvenirs, logos, childhood stickers/glow in the dark stars, and other things from daily life.

I usually prefer journals that already have a design to decorating the covers now.
