Re: Orwell
I am reading along with Orwell's Diaries a fine biography on Orwell by D. J. Taylor. I also checked out of our local library a book/essay by Christopher Hitchens "Why Orwell Matters"-I will look at these books this evening to see if Orwell submitted a list of people considered to be Communists. As far as I know England at the time of Orwell had people from all different political positions from Socialists, Communists etc. . . I do not recall right now the British government cracking down on Communists during the years Orwell was living. I will have to do some research to find out. Of course in American it was a totally different story. The US government hated Communism and I am sure you recall the Red Scare of the 1920's and the famous McCarthy trials of the 1950's.

I was looking at the book "Why Orwell Matters" by Hitchens and he has a whole chapter devoted to the rumor that Orwell submitted a list of communists to the British government/Chapter 7 'The List' pg.155. I will keep digging into this information about Orwell. We must keep in mind that Orwell was no saint.

Re: Orwell
The article on him, I think at Wikipedia, kept pointing out that he kept skating back and forth between being sort of elitist, and then being more or less of a Communist sympathizer. He wrote 1984 and Animal Farm, but then kept that list of people he thought leaned pink.

Both books were very good, though I have to say the torture in 1984 was very offputting.
